Carpe Diem
O meu atelier no Palácio Pombal é baixinho: não dá para saltar lá dentro sem bater com a cabeça no tecto.
Tem uma janela para a Rua d' O Século que quando está aberta deixa entrar uma brisa que levanta o pó do estuque que cobre os frescos escondidos e da argamassa solta dos azulejos roubados. Mesmo quando a janela está fechada oiço todas as pessoas a passar lá fora em todas as línguas que conheço e desconheço. Há quem pare encostado à janela a falar ao telemóvel, porque visto de fora não parece ter alguém cá dentro.
A Luísa tem um atelier por baixo do meu: tento não fazer barulho para não a incomodar mais do que aqueles que param a falar encostados à janela.
O atelier da Carla fica ao lado e cheira a térmitas. É o que ela diz. A mim cheira-me ao produto que ela usou para as tentar matar.
Seria impossível que tudo isto não ficasse impresso em cada ideia que tenho nesse espaço. Aliás, todo o palácio é uma sobreposição de sucessivas ideias e por isso o meu atelier baixinho não é uma sala; é um laboratório.

Carpe Diem
My studio at Palácio Pombal is low: you can't jump in there without hitting your head on the ceiling.
It has a window to Rua d'O Século, which when open lets in a breeze that raises the dust from the stucco covering the hidden frescoes and from the loose mortar of the stolen tiles. Even when the window is closed I hear everyone passing by in every language I know and don't. Some people stop leaning against the window talking on their cell phone, because from the outside there doesn't seem to be anyone inside.
Luisa has a studio under mine: I try not to make noise so as not to disturb her more than those who stop talking leaning against the window.
Carla's atelier is next door and smells of termites. That's what she says. To me it smells like the product she used to try to kill them.
It would be impossible for all of this not to be imprinted on every idea I have in that space. In fact, the entire palace is an overlay of successive ideas and that is why my small studio is not a room; it's a laboratory.
