Ponto Cego
Seis movimentos para apontar sem desvendar, mantendo na sombra aquilo que desaparece sob a luz e que perde significado quando pronunciado.
I. Bastidores
[Teatro] Espaço à volta do palco que não é visto pelo público.
[Figurado] Conjunto de coisas íntimas, ocultas ou secretas.
Há bichos que vivem escondidos e só sabemos da sua existência pelos discretos vestígios que deixam: só lhes conhecermos os sons, os rastos ou as tocas.
Nem todos os artistas necessitam do espectáculo, nem da pompa ou da exposição.
Conheço dois que se mantiveram no silêncio dos bastidores - onde são reconhecidos e admirados - para de lá espreitarem e nos ensinarem sobre o invisível, a maravilha e a curiosidade.
É fascinante intuir a tentativa (tanto dos trabalhos, como dos autores) de apagar o seu próprio rasto.
II. Cegueira
Os miniaturistas persas e otomanos dedicavam as suas vidas à ilustração de manuscritos, geralmente encomendados pela corte do sultão. Conhece-se o seu impulso ascético, renunciando à assinatura das obras, rejeitando a ideia de estilo individual e — sobretudo — o seu afastamento de uma obsessão ocidental pela mimesis (a imitação da realidade). Para produzir as imagens mais belas não era necessário ver, mas sim repetir: repetir durante gerações o mesmo gesto, até que a função cedesse lugar ao ritual e do parecer pudesse brotar o ser.
Na escola de Herat conta-se que era motivo de descrédito um artista chegar a uma idade avançada sem ficar cego. Para além das longas horas de trabalho delicado e minucioso, os miniaturistas empenhavam-se em exercícios para acelerar a própria cegueira. Quando o processo tardava demasiados anos, vazavam os próprios olhos com uma agulha.
«[…] “Estou cego”, disse, “é verdade, mas guardo na memória todas as maravilhas, os mais pequenos traços de pincel: já não os vejo, mas conheço-os, a minha mão sabe-os de cor. Os meus olhos já não se distrairão com o mundo e poderei descrever a beleza que trago na memória”.»

III. Andar em Círculos
Os cientistas do Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics, em Tübingen (Alemanha) demonstraram que as pessoas andam em círculos quando se perdem num território sem referências visuais.
Na verdade, o círculo seria sempre inevitável. Por isso, do retorno dizemos eterno.
Trata-se apenas de uma questão de escala: perdidos na floresta, rodando sobre nós próprios, ou em torno do sol. Toda a linha recta é um arco de um círculo infinito.
IV. O Único Lugar Estável do Cosmos
O pêndulo concebido por Jean Foucault, em 1851, demonstra a rotação da Terra em relação ao seu próprio eixo. De uma forma simplista podemos dizer que a Terra se move sob o pêndulo (que se suspende de um sistema quase sem atrito). Acompanhar as suas lentas oscilações é pressentir a austera velocidade do tempo, é olhar para o único ponto fixo do universo.
Casaubon — personagem d’ O Pêndulo de Foucault (1988), de Umberto Eco — irrita-se ao ver um casal que não entende a solenidade de estar perante tal aparato. Leram a folha de sala, o texto explicativo: afastaram-se. “Miserável. Tinha por cima da cabeça o único lugar estável do cosmos. […] Ele instruído em qualquer manual que lhe tinha ofuscado as possibilidades de se maravilhar, ela inerte, inacessível ao arrepio do infinito, ambos sem terem registado na memória a experiência aterradora daquele seu encontro”.

VI. Evereste
Edmund Hillary fotografou Tenzing Norgay no topo do Monte Evereste, a 29 de Maio de 1953.
Estes foram os primeiros a atingir o pico mais alto do mundo, onde permaneceram durante um quarto de hora, antes de iniciar uma descida sisifiana.
Maravilham-me estes detalhes: que tenham carregado uma câmara na mochila até os 8848,86 metros acima do nível do mar; que a fotografia seja absolutamente indistinta (um vulgar vulto branco sobre um frívolo fundo branco); que a descida seja mais demorada e perigosa que a escalada; que a imprensa quisesse saber qual dos dois tinha chegado lá primeiro. Como se um pudesse sem o outro.

Blind Spot
Six movements to point without revealing, keeping in the shadow what disappears under the light and loses meaning when pronounced.
I. Backstage
[Theatre] Space around the stage that is not seen by the audience.
[Figured] Set of intimate, hidden or secret things.
There are animals that live in hiding and we only understand their existence by the discreet traces they leave: we only know their sounds, tracks or burrows.
Not all artists need spectacle, or pomp or exposure. I know two who remained silent backstage - where they are recognized and admired - to peek in and teach us about the invisible, the wonder and curiosity.
It is fascinating to intuit the attempt (both by the works and by the authors) to erase their own tracks.
II. Blindness
Persian and Ottoman miniaturists devoted their lives to illustrating manuscripts, usually commissioned by the sultan's court. His ascetic impulse is well known, renouncing the signature of works, rejecting the idea of individual style and — above all — their distance from a Western obsession with mimesis (the imitation of reality). To produce the most beautiful images, it was not necessary to see, but to repeat: to repeat the same gesture for generations, until function gave way to ritual and from appearance could sprout being.
In the school of Herat it is said that it was a source of disbelief for an artist to reach an advanced age without going blind. In addition to the long hours of delicate and meticulous work, the miniaturists engaged in exercises to accelerate their own blindness. When the process took too many years, they poked their own eyes out with a needle.

III. Walking in Circles
Scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics, in Tübingen (Germany) demonstrated that people walk in circles when they get lost in a territory without visual references.
In fact, the circle would always be inevitable. That's why we call eternal to the return.
It's just a question of scale: lost in the forest, spinning around ourselves, or around the sun. Every straight line is an arc of an infinite circle.
IV. The Only Steady Place in the Cosmos
The pendulum conceived by Jean Foucault, in 1851, demonstrates the rotation of the Earth in relation to its own axis. In a simplistic way we can say that the Earth moves under the pendulum (which is suspended from an almost frictionless system). To follow its slow oscillations is to foresee the austere speed of time, it is to look at the only fixed point in the universe.
Casaubon — character in Foucault's Pendulum (1988), by Umberto Eco — gets irritated when he sees a couple who don't understand the solemnity of being before such an apparatus. They read the the explanatory text: then moved away. "Miserable. Above his head was the only steady place in the cosmos. […] He instructed in any manual that had overshadowed his possibilities of being amazed, she inert, inaccessible to the shudder of infinity, both without having recorded in their memory the terrifying experience of that encounter”.

VI. Everest
Edmund Hillary photographed Tenzing Norgay at the top of Mount Everest, on May 29, 1953.
These were the first to reach the highest peak in the world, where they remained for a quarter of an hour, before starting a Sisyphean descent.
These details amaze me: that a camera was carried in their backpack up to 8848.86 meters above sea level; that the photograph is absolutely indistinct (an ordinary white bulk on a frivolous white background); that the descent is longer and more dangerous than the climb; that the press wanted to know which of the two got there first. As if one could do without the other.
